Apple Pie in Jars and Cherry Pie in Jars




  • For the Crust:
  • 2 and a half packages of ready-made crust
  • For the Apple Filling:
  • 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut up
  • 2 Red Delicious apples, peeled and cut up
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice to keep apples from browning
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Salt if desired
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of butter
  • For the Cherry Pie Filling:
  • 1 can store-bought cherry pie filling
  • Crumb Topping (for 4-6 pies)
  • 1/4C brown sugar
  • 1/4 C flour
  • 2 Tbs oats
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 Tbs cold butter
  • Combine sugar, flour and cinnamon. Cut in butter. Add oats and stir to combine.
  • Preparation:
    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
    2. For the Crust:
    3. Clean your mason jars.
    4. Spray the heck out of your mason jars with non stick spray.
    5. Roll out the dough a little thinner than it is in the package. Use a pizza wheel to cut into pieces. Now place the pieces in your jars and press them so you have very little gaps. Just keep working it till you get the groove going.
    6. Set aside.
    7. For the Apple Pie Filling:
    8. Peel and cut up your apples. You want small cubes for jars. Sprinkle the lemon juice over them to keep them from browning while you measure out everything else.
    9. Combine brown sugar, flour and spices in another bowl and mix. Then pour over your apples and mix it all together.
    10. Spoon the apples into 8 of the 12 jars. Fill about ¾ of the way.
    11. Put a pat of butter on each one.
    12. Top with more crust.
    13. Pinch or use a fork to seal them up.
    14. You can brush the top with milk or butter if you like. I didn’t this time.
    15. For the Cherry Pie Filling:
    16. Open can, spoon into the remaining 4 jars.
    17. Top with crust.
    18. Pinch or use fork to secure tops.
    19. Make sure you leave a steam hole.
    20. Using a little cookie cutter to make the hole is fun.
    21. Cooking them:
    22. Place all the jars on a rimmed baking sheet. Carefully place that in your preheated oven. Cook for 35 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
    23. Remove and let cool or eat right away.
    24. Serve with a big old jar happy smile!
    25. Notes
    26. I used 12 x 250 ml jars. I believe in the States they are ½ pint jars. Make sure they are the wide mouth so the pie can come out. I like to add more spices to the top of the crust when I make pie. I like my apple ones super cinnamon-y!
